"Brown water flows in and out of the polder with the tides. Bumps of mud are formed, pits sucked together. Sometimes I stand before a vast lake. Sometimes in front of a network of drying streams. Carp spawn there too long and are left exhausted and dehydrated among the reeds, in the shallows."
Modderland is a project by Belgian photographer Rebecca Tanghe, in which she takes viewers on her daily walks along the river Durme in the Waasland region. As part of the renaturalisation process of the polders in the area, breaches in the dyke allow brackish water to flow in and out of the wetlands beside the water. In her work, the photographer observes this ever-changing landscape through the shifting currents of the stream. She captures this transformation with fairytale-like softness, creating otherworldly scenes.
This microcosm now co-exists within the photobook. A silver cover glimmers like water in the sun, while a double spine unfolds to reveal a photograph of a long-hidden stream. Typography floats down the page like woody debris, reminiscent of a landscape as it was always meant to be: vast, wild, and mysterious.
