This book by Madeline Schwartzman and Edward Ashton explores the boundaries of what it means to be alive, speculating on what ‘life’ is and how humankind will (or will not) fit into a new order of hybrid species. It is a wonderfully curated collection of works covering projects by various artists, from a silicone jellyfish powered by a rat’s heart to a drone that “smells” through a moth’s antenna; from wearables grown from human skin to an AI-driven snack bar in the metaverse.

The hardcover book is designed in the format of a sci-fi guidebook-meets-encyclopedia. It combines organic and playful visuals with a more tech-based aesthetic of pixels, grids, and a systematic approach to layout. As readers flip through its 256 pages, they dive into different sections curated by the authors: (1) New Embodiment, (2) Chimera, (3) Cellular Packages, (4) Biomimicry, (5) Change of State, (6) Phantasia, and (7) Algorithmic Futures—surveying the many interpretations of what it means to be ‘alive’.
