Food For Thought

Exhibition

Where does our food come from, and what are the long-term consequences of the system we have created? In ‘Food for Thought’, photographer and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen investigates the impact and scope of food production and consumption on a global scale. Combining photography, film, and data visualizations, the exhibition highlights five countries and reveals the complex systems that shape the way we produce, distribute, and consume food. The project is accompanied by a publication in the form of a food atlas.

This project was created during employment at LMNOP.works

Inspired by the architecture, aesthetics and marketing language of food retail, the exhibition consists of loud colours and big spatial gestures: prints are mounted on freestanding shelving structures, paired with large-scale digital projections dedicated to the five countries featured in the space.

Spanning 800 m², the exhibition encourages visitors to draw their own conclusions by combining the image material with a supporting informational layer. Data is used in new and playful ways: a live data tracker with statistics changing in real time, maps illustrating food import and export streams, and interactive moments where visitors are encouraged to leave behind their own data in a visual form.

From the start of the project, sustainability was embedded in the design process. At the end of the exhibition’s lifecycle, the steel shelving structures can be repurposed within the food industry, reducing the project’s overall environmental footprint.

The project was first presented at the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam and has since travelled to locations worldwide.
